ftpput: command not found on VMware ESX

Postby epictech » Wed Apr 06, 2011 4:03 am

Upon attempting to upload a backup via FTP, I receive the following error:
22:46:22,832 ERR upload failed XXXXXXX.vmdk (bash: line 1: ftpput: command not found

This is running on ESX Server 3.5.0. I'm having no problems at all with the backups, they are completing properly, it's just the FTP command that's not working. I've got the FTP Client setting enabled in the Vmware Firewall config, but it looks like the ftpput command doesn't exist? Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi,
I'm sorry , ftpput is part of the busybox toolbox, that is only available on ESXi (with a i) and probably not on ESX.

Can you download the ftpput binary at http://www.magikmon.com/download/mksbackup
in your PATH (maybe /bin ) and then run it. If the binary is compatible with your ESX, you should get
the help banner :

Code: Select all
# ftpput
BusyBox v1.18.4 (2011-03-14 17:23:49 CET) multi-call binary.

Usage: ftpput [OPTIONS] HOST [REMOTE_FILE] LOCAL_FILE

Store a local file on a remote machine via FTP

Options:
        -v,--verbose    Verbose
        -u,--username   Username
        -p,--password   Password
        -P,--port       Port number

If it works, try MKSBackup again.

Please report if it works or not.

Regards.

Hi Alain,

Thanks for the very quick reply! I downloaded ftpput and put it in /bin on my server, the SSH'd in and tested the ftpput command, it ran properly.

Code: Select all
[root@esx1 bin]# ftpput
BusyBox v1.18.4 (2011-03-14 17:23:49 CET) multi-call binary.

Usage: ftpput [OPTIONS] HOST [REMOTE_FILE] LOCAL_FILE

Store a local file on a remote machine via FTP

Options:
        -v,--verbose    Verbose
        -u,--username   Username
        -p,--password   Password
        -P,--port       Port number

However, the backups are still failing to upload via FTP. I'm seeing the following in my log:
2011-04-06 07:50:58 ERR upload failed FW1 - Pfsense.vmx (ftpput: bad address 'epictech')

And here is the FTP line from my mksbackup.ini file:
destination=<copy=mon-sun>ftp://username:password@epictech.it:21/public_html/vmbackup/${vm}-${nweekdayname}.bkf

epictech looks to be unknown by your VMware server. Try using its IP address instead or configure your VMware DNS properly.
